This, our second Autumn/Winter clothing review is all about bib tights from Shutt Velo Rapide, Owayo and Spokesman Clothing. Generally, reviewers thought the pad was critical to their comfort whereas design less so than with the jerseys they reviewed in Autumn/Winter Clothing Review: Jerseys.
Who tested and reviewed the bib tights/shorts?
Cyclists, just like you and me. Experienced cyclists belonging to cycling clubs riding a variety of terrain in a variety of weather conditions. They rode in the clothing, washed and dried it and rode it again … and again, and again (plus, more washing of course). Their findings are based upon a number of key areas important to cyclists. They are not technical people, it was all about the clothing, the weather and the riding.
What did we look for in our clothing review?
We weren’t interested in the technical aspects of the garments. If the technical aspects work then the garments are going to be worn successfully so we felt other things were more important to us as cyclists. It’s no good having the latest innovative, technical garment if it doesn’t do what was expected. So, we focussed on:
- Quality of construction;
- Quality of materials;
- Visual design;
- Comfort and cut;
- Comfort and cut while riding.
Plus, we allowed for any additional relevant comments.
What did our reviewers say?
Shutt Velo Rapide – Bib Tights
Quality of construction: These are very well made with secure stitching. The design of the pad provides ensures a smooth transition between the pad and legging material. The grippers at the ankle are also securely stitched.
Quality of materials: Made from Vuelta LYCRA® fabric with water repellent treatment whilst providing highly breathable insulation. The comfort of the pad is always crucial and the unique design. The custom Shutt pad was described by the reviewer as ‘so comfortable you you just don’t know it is there!’
Visual design: With the striking multi-coloured panel, the design is unique and often commented upon by other riders as being very distinctive. The positioning of the multi-coloured panel suggests the wearer is wearing shorts with leggings.
Comfort and cut: Size M fitted well. Reviewer at 75 kgs, 172 cms in height. No chafing, fleecy feel suggested warmth for those colder temperatures.
Comfort and cut while riding: Riding in these bib tights was a joy. The pad worked well, it’s an all-day riding pad, ideal at this time of year for those long base miles. The material resisted a few showers but had to admit defeat through a prolonged hail storm as expected for anything but the most waterproof of clothing!
Editor’s note: These tights are now on a long-term test through the winter so more about them in the Spring!
Spokesman Clothing – Bib Tights
Quality of construction: Discrete and secure stitching in this well-made bib tight. Stitching was found to be a little bulky down the leg in one or two places and is likely to be down to this particular bib tight rather than a feature of all bib tights.
Quality of materials: The fleecy feel to the legs felt comfortable and of good quality. Bib straps had a little stretch which will suit most riders but be sure of your correct sizing. The pad is the deluxe seven hour Elastic Interface® endurance pad manufactured by the world’s specialist Cytech. It is a good quality pad and should be comfortable with sufficient padding for longer winter rides. The fabric is the original Italian Thermoroubaix which ensures our tights are waterproof.
Visual design: Simple black colour with a reflective strip on the power leg.
Comfort and cut: The elastic in the bib straps lacked a little stretch which caused the feeling that the bib tights were too big.
Comfort and cut while riding: When riding the comfort of the bib tights came into their own. These need to be ridden to fully appreciate their comfort despite misgivings when worn off the bike. Size M was tested. Reviewer would normally wear size M (Castelli sizing) but would be tempted to try a smaller size.
Owayo – CP2 Sport Bib Shorts
Quality of construction: Very well-made bib shorts. Stitching all secure.
Quality of materials: Materials of good quality made from Ti-tex ultra.dry xlastic. Anatomically shaped athletic Pro Pad, made of multi density foam.
Visual design: Pleasing design with U-shaped panelling, quite distinctive.
Comfort and cut: This is an athletic cut, not a pro cut and so, perhaps, a little ‘generous’ but not uncomfortably so. The quality of the material ans stitching all aid comfort and these shorts would be an excellent first-choice for anyone looking for their first or training bib shorts.
Comfort and cut while riding: Tested riding relatively short distances and very comfortable for those conditions. During longer rides the pad may be insufficient although, of course, this is a such a personal and subjective thing. Great for training rides!
